The purpose of this study is to establish the environmental parameters that cause replacement of the natural nitrogen removal pathway with a process that retains nitrogen in the water ecosystem. Nitrogen is a nutrient that stimulates phytoplankton growth in aquatic ecosystems. In the past 150 years the amount of nitrogen in the environment has increased and intensive phytoplankton blooms are a severe, global problem. There are naturally occurring microbial processes that mitigate the effects of excess nitrogen load by converting nitrogen into a form that cannot be utilized by most phytoplankton. However, in low oxygen conditions these processes are replaced with a process that retains nitrogen as available. Hence, once the oxygen concentration decreases, the natural nitrogen removal capacity is lost, and nitrogen builds up stimulating phytoplankton growth even more. The results of this study will help to understand the mechanisms that lead to this vicious circle of eutrophication.
