Project description
Recent discoveries in molecular biology have revealed that organisms can modify their DNA in many ways and these modifications in turn can affect gene activity. This field is called epigenetics and it is transforming our understanding of inheritance. It has become clear that epigenetic modifications can be inherited in many organisms. Often these inherited changes are related to way organisms deal with short term environmental changes. In this project we will investigate how important epigenetics is for organisms to be able deal with environmental changes and how does epigenetically mediated coping with short-term environmental changes interact with long-term evolutionary changes. Understanding this is crucial if we want to predict how organisms are able to deal with global changes in their environment.
