Project description
In nature, functional characteristics of organisms are central to where species occur and why, and how they affect the functioning of ecosystems. Trait-based ecology is a newly developed field combining approaches that take into account these characteristics. Trait-based ecology improves our knowledge of the underlying biological mechanisms that drive ecosystems, thus enabling better predictions of how they will be altered by on-going environmental change. Using large empirical data sets, this research project will apply and develop modern mathematical methods of trait-based ecology to study the phytoplankton of the Baltic Sea. The objective of the project is to add to our understanding of the functioning of the planktonic ecosystem and how it is expected to fare in the face of global change.
