Project description
The first part of the project addressed the formation of Vyborg city centre.  The opportunities to analyse the digitised old town plans by means of geoinformatics were studied as part of this research. The possibilities for the use of GIS applications for historic city research were found to be significant. However, in spite of georeferencing, errors in the oldest maps caused practical problems in data analysis. In addition to the published scientific final report, based on the digitisation work with the old maps, a free online digital atlas of Vyborg in Finnish, English and Russian was prepared. Another project aim concerned the different interpretations of Vyborg’s urban space. The main findings were that Finns maintained a strong adherence to Finnish interpretations of Vyborg from the period of Finnish independence in the 1920s and 1930s, while Russians see Vyborg as a mediaeval European city.
