Project description
Multimodal behavioral and neuroimaging methods, including electroencepahlography and functional magnetic resonance imaging, will be used in the proposed Finnish-Russian collaborative research to study differences in perception and cognition in persons with culturally determined holistic vs. analytical cognitive styles. We specifically hypothesize differences in temporal processing, as well as task-performance related brain responses and in social cognition when performing a task and watching others engage in interactions under conditions of cooperation vs. competition. It is anticipated that subjects with holistic style are more prone to perceive and experience cooperative conditions are more meaningful and motivating and vice versa. Notably, persons with holistic vs. analytic cognitive styles will be screened both from Finnish and Russian populations in order to control for other cultural variables that might explain the findings besides analytical vs. holistic cognitive styles.
