Project description
Our research project concerned the relation between the behavior of partly autonomous group agents that seem to have “minds of their own”, such as states and corporations, and the thought and behavior of their individual members or position-holders. We argued that it is appropriate to attribute quasi-mental states, such as beliefs and intentions, to such groups when a sufficient number of their members act in the collectivistic “we-mode” instead of the individualistic“ I-mode”. We developed a revisionary conceptual framework that is based on the I-mode/we-mode distinction for the needs of the social sciences, and compared it to currently prevalent individualistic approaches to social scientific theorizing.
