Project description
We investigated activation and functional connectivity of brain areas that are involved in attention and memory. We applied structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), diffusion tensor imaging and tractography, and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). We determined neural connections between prefrontal and motor cortex and striatum. The method can be used to direct TMS on areas that have neural connections with striatum. With fMRI we showed that directing attention to one type of images, while ignoring other type of images, increases activity in brain areas involved in processing of the attended visual information and decreases activity in areas involved in the ignored visual information. Modulation of activity is controlled by prefrontal cortex, and is weaker in 7-11-year-old children than young adults. Also functional connectivity between prefrontal cortex and visual areas is weaker in children explaining their poorer performance in attention and memory tasks.
