Project description
Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders are a major public health problem afflicting about 3 % of the humans. The suggested of schizophrenia risk factors include e.g. obstetric complications, cannabis use, early motor dysfunction, and low IQ. The aim of the project is to study trends and interactions of risk factors for schizophrenia, other psychotic disorders, and psychotic-like symptoms in two population based birth cohorts with a 20 year interval. In the large prospective Northern Finland Birth Cohorts 1966 and 1986 data has been collected since the pregnancy of the mother. These two cohorts together offer an unique possibility to study time trends and interactions in risk factors for schizophrenia and related outcomes in comparable samples. The studies utilizing the prospective cohort design and novel methods are likely to find new risk factors and their interactions. For the first time, we expect to clarify possible changes in the risk factors in time.
