Project description
Inter-individual variability is large in human personality, mind, and behaviour as well as in the very core cognitive operations, such as perception, attention, and working memory. In this project, we used M/EEG, stereo-EEG, and TMS to identify the systems-level neuronal mechanisms that causally underlie individual cognitive capabilities and moment-to-moment fluctuations in cognitive performance. We advanced a multi-scale model where the human mind at any moment comprises of nested mental states in time scales from tens of milliseconds to hundreds of seconds, which emerge from multi-scale neuronal dynamics. We found several lines of evidence for this model and identified candidate mechanisms for neuronal coupling and dynamics, which explained inter-individual variability in cognitive ability and personality traits. These results advance both the basic research on the human mind and its mechanisms and open new avenues for understanding the systems-level mechanisms of brain disorders.
