Project description
Hard metal coatings applied by thermal spray processes are extensively used in wear resistant industrial applications. Continuously increasing demands for materials durability creates need for better materials. One solution to improve hard metal properties by decreasing carbide grain size to nanoscale. Nanostructured carbide powders have suffered issues in synthesis and processing, health and safety, which have hinder their wider exploitation. In NANOSOLU project novel powder processing method to prepare nano-carbide WC-Co powders has been developed. Resulted powders have microstructural and chemical features unattainable with any other kind of conventional manufacturing processes. The novel process avoids handling of dry nano-powders, which provides huge advantage for health and safe handling. The workability of powders has been demonstrated in thermal spray coatings. The resulting coatings showed great potential for industrial applications leading to a longer lifetime.
