Project description
Asthma and allergies are common diseases. Climate change has marked influence on environmental conditions, e.g. affects pollen, and may have profound effects on asthma and allergies. We assess both short-term and long-term effects of environmental exposures related to changing climate on asthma and allergies and mortality in two population-based studies: Espoo Cohort Study and Finnish Environment and Asthma Study. The focus is on health effects of air pollution, allergenic pollen and extreme climatic factors in vulnerable populations. We apply innovatively complementary research methodologies, including new modeling approaches for air pollution and pollen, statistical environmental and information technologies, genetics, clinical medicine and epidemiology. Information produced by this consortium project will be useful for health care and community planning and developing warning systems. The database on environmental health supports preparedness systems and health policy making.
