The research project “Disentangling the emotional dimension in beginning teachers’ work” focuses on how teachers’ emotions are intertwined with the micropolitics of the educational institutions. The research studies how teachers by using emotional labour try to cope with emotional rules that exist in their work. The main attention is in beginning teachers, who work in early childhood education and in primary and secondary levels of education. The project employs narrative approach. The research materials will be produced together with teachers and will consist of stories based on individual and group interviews and observations.
The project takes place at the University of Oulu in 2013-2017. The project will construct theoretical understanding about the holistic nature of teachers’ work as profoundly relational, moral and emotional. For pre-service and in-service teacher education, the project will develop pedagogy to support teachers to work with their emotions.
