Project description
This study examined an intergenerational transmission of social well-being or exclusion, and mechanisms explaining a transmission. The primary targets were a) health risk and health behavior, b) socioeconomic status and c) socioemotional family atmosphere with its wide outcomes. A multidisciplinary approach with 3- generation- design was adopted. Two main results were the overall strength of the transmission, and a paramount importance of childhood circumstances: an increased socioeconomic situation in adulthood could not compensate health risk related to a low childhood socioeconomic situation. Transmission of a socioemotional atmosphere of the family was evident and partly genetically explained. Transmission was mediated by a maturity of a personality: favorable familial circumstances developed mature personalities of offspring while adverse circumstances predisposed to exclusion- related personality factors. The findings are important from the point of view of social policy.
