Project description
This project focuses on the influence of ecological factors on one of the key traits in all organisms, immunity. More specifically it will assess whether individuals use developmental conditions as predictors of future environmental conditions and shape their immunity accordingly, and if so can such predictive adaptive responses last across generations. I will assess the influence of high immune defence on other important life history traits, and finally use genomic tools to test the role of candidate genes and epigenetic regulation in these responses. The study system is the Glanville fritillary butterfly, for which long term ecological data as well as the required molecular tools are available, and for which numerous life history traits including immunity can easily be assessed. Results from this project will increase our understanding about the interplay between ecology and genetics in shaping variation in immunity in natural populations.
