Project description
The Relational Mind project focused on processes of embodied synchronization, the aim being in deepening our understanding about body language in couple therapy. By focusing on similar, simultaneous physiological responses and nonverbal behaviors, such as gestures, movements, postures and prosody, we wanted to study how attunement between participants happens, and whether this attunement is related to process and outcome of therapy. There exists significant synchrony in participantsí sympathetic nervous system during the sessions. In successful therapies, this synchrony increased between couples during the therapy process. Body movements and postures were noticed to be important in how interpersonal bonds emerged. Important events of emotional sharing and therapeutic change often happened in silent moments of the session, highlighting the importance of body language. Results deepen our understanding about healing mechanisms of therapy and are widely applicable.
