Project description
The project produced several maps indicating the main investment sites for agriculture and forestry in Mozambique. Different investment types are located in different parts of the country. The number of forest and agricultural investments tend to increase in the period from 2007 to 2013. In general our study has shown that perceived impacts of forest plantations on local communitiesí ecosystem services were negative. Firewood, NWFP and land availability have been reported to decrease due to the investments. However, the pressure on natural forests had been observed already before the establishment of plantations. The forest investments had positive impact on infrastructure, employment and the diversity of livelihood strategies of local communities, and as a result they have enhanced the adaptive capacity of local households to climate change. The above ground and soil organic carbon stocks of forest plantations were found to be the same order of magnitude as native miombo woodlands.
