Project description
Our main goal in the project has been to achieve an improved understanding of the absorbing carbonaceous aerosol species in Indo-Gangetic Plain and Himalayan foothills. The main results can be divided into the following three sub-themes. 1) We conducted several intensive measurement campaigns in two sites in India; in Gual Pahari, close to New Delhi and in Mukteshwar, in the foothills of Himalaya. Our measurements, using Single Particle Soot Photometer (SP2), offer first time real measurement-based information about the black carbon mixing state in India. 2) We have also applied arguably the most sophisticated approach so far to estimate the radiative effect of BrC aerosols in IGP by exploiting the measurements from several Indian sites of the AERONET program and the extended approach of Arola et al. 2011. 3) Moreover, we exploited global model to estimate both climate and health impacts due to the emission reductions, if traditional cookstoves were replaced by improved technology.
