Project description
We introduce novel programmable approaches to create ordered multi-component assemblies of optically and magnetically active nanoscale objects. The methods and concepts developed will be generic and applicable for programmable assembly of nanostructures for various purposes. One objective is to enhance the magneto-plasmonic effects beyond the best present-day achievements, via protein cage-based assemblies combining ferromagnetic materials and metals, in two and three dimensions. The use of the protein cages allows programmable tuning of the magneto-optical response. Another biomolecular template considered in this proposal is native cellulose nanowhiskers and its supramolecular modifications. We also aim at extending the concept of magnetic plasmons by using novel materials. The project requires expertise in physics, chemistry, nanoscience, and bio-based materials. It combines optics, magnetism, self-assembly, soft materials research and advanced scanning probe microscopy.
