Project description
Two-dimensional (2D) materials, such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have recently attracted lots of attention due to their unique properties and potential applications. Using a combination of theoretical and experimental techniques we studied the growth of graphene and other 2D materials, their properties, and how defects can be used to engineer heir characterisitics. Specifically, in the context of chemical vapor deposition synthesis of graphene, boron nitride, and mixed BCN systems with tunable band gaps, we studied the solubility and mobility of B/C/N atoms in the transition metals used as substrates for the growth and suggested the optimum growth conditions. We further investigated the growth of 2D silica on metal surfaces and acquired the fundamental microscopic knowledge of the growth mechanism. Our results published in leading scientific journals provided important data on the properties of 2D systems and their potential applications.
