The project explored how agency emerges in human activities. The starting point was Vygotsky's principle of double stimulation applied in three empirical studies: the so-called waiting experiment study, the Fifth Dimension study, and the examination strategies study. The studies analysed and facilitated the formation of agency in activities aimed at educational change in elementary school and at university. The project led to a reinterpretation of Vygotsky's principle of double stimulation. While conceptualizations of agency in the field of education see it primarily as a property and are largely borrowed from other disciplines, the results of the project suggest that agency can also be studied as a process which is traceable in its emergence. This result opens up novel possibilities of supporting and enhancing the emergence of agency and for developing a properly educational theory of agency formation.
