Beskrivning av projektet
The aim of the research was to investigate the experiences, construction and organization of human security in transnational Somali families. The starting point was to explore the question of security, not from a point of view of national security, but through the everyday experiences and agency of Muslim families. The data was collected through ethnographic family interviews with two generations in Toronto, Canada, and metropolitan Helsinki, Finland. In addition, family members in Northern Somalia (in Somaliland and Puntland) were interviewed. The experiences of families related to security varied according to temporal, local and global processes. The rise of violent radical groups was a concern also for Muslim parents. A family was a crucial factor that enhanced integration, sense of safety and wellbeing among both parents and their children. For the second generation, however, the meaning of family ties in the Horn of Africa decreases.
