Beskrivning av projektet
In recent years there has been a surge of interest in the relations between Europe and non-European societies in the early modern era, as well as in European perceptions of various forms of government in Asia, in particular, Islamic empires. This research project attempted to bring Giovanni Botero (ca. 1540–1617), a seminal Jesuit political writer and pioneer figure of early modern European intellectual and political life, to the fore as one of the progenitors of the comparative study of various forms of government. The project attempted a reinterpretation of Botero’s political thought on the basis of a systematic study of the Universal Relations and foregrounded Botero’s role as one of the founders of the comparative study of various types of government.
