Project description
The goal of the project was to enhance the scientific utilization of the recently corrected long-term database of energetic particles by NOAA/POES satellites. A new data server was built to automate all the calibrations and corrections, as well as to store the processed data. We studied, e.g., the drivers of energetic particle fluxes in near-Earth space and their effects on atmosphere and ground climate. We found that energetic particle precipitation into the atmosphere is mostly driven by high-speed solar wind streams, and they have had significant effect on winter time surface climate variations in the Northern hemisphere at least within the last 100 years. The project was done in collaboration with many international consortia (e.g., COST and ESPAS). The developed database was connected to a central data portal constructed in the ESPAS EU/FP7 project. Results of the project were also important in establishing and activities of the ReSoLVE Centre of Excellence for years 2014-2019.
