Beskrivning av projektet
The goal of the research was to provide new knowledge on the ways in which institutions influence business strategies in emerging economies. This was analyzed conceptually, and empirically on interview, survey and statistical data collected in China and in Russia. As a result the project first, identified a conceptual mechanism that helps explaining why corruption in Russia is more serious obstacle for businesses than in China. Second, it extended the knowledge on the role of institutions in foreign investors’ location choices by showing that institutional heterogeneity not only between countries but also within countries matters. Third, it showed that business strategies designed in the institutional context of developed market economies do not work in similar ways in emerging economies due to institutional flaws. Finally, it empirically identified a mechanism that explains the motivations for Russian firms to channel their domestic investments via offshore financial centers.
