Project description
The project raised the understanding about the acoustics of concert halls to a new level. Novel technology was invented for measurements and auralizations. These novel tools enable the authentic reproductions of concert halls in the laboratory for perceptual studies and they also enable us to visualise cumulative sound energy in the time-frequency-space domain. The most striking result is the explanation for the role of acoustics for the perceived dynamics of music, even though the concert hall is a linear system. The project proved in several ways that the classical shoe-box shaped concert halls render music more expressive and make stronger impact to listeners, while halls with modern architecture the music is perceived more clear, but also blunter.
