Project description
Typical adult gut harbour hundreds of distinct bacterial phylotypes, with a profound impact on well-being, digestion, immune system and health. We used large collections of intestinal microbiome profiling and custom statistical techniques to characterize the population variation of the gut microbiota in western adults. We identified alternative stable states in specific sub-communities of this ecosystem, associated with host phenotype and health, and demonstrated how the ecosystem state could be manipulated by dietary interventions. These findings contribute to basic scientific understanding of human molecular biology as well as biomedical applications that can improve our well-being. To facilitate further use of the results, we released the data and novel algorithms under open source licenses. The research was carried out in University of Helsinki, Finland and Wageningen University, The Netherlands. For further information, see my research homepage
