Project description
Climate change provides a major challenge for the sustainable management of key ecosystem services. CLIMES was a three-year project, funded by the Academy of Finland and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The project partners were SYKE and Univ. of Helsinki (Finland) and RCEES (China). The project increased the process understanding and developed methodologies regarding spatially explicit values of ecosystem services and sustainability indicators across landscapes, in the context of climate change impacts and adaptation. The integrative project consisted of field studies, statistical analyses of long-term and regional data, modelling, GIS and remote sensing, and ecosystem service accounting. The work was carried out both at highly instrumented research sites and at larger landscape scales. The project work was documented in two special issues in recognized international scientific journals: ‘Current opinion in Environmental Sustainability’ and ‘Landscape Ecology’.
