Project description
Studying climate change impacts is difficult because the effects will mostly materialize in the future. However, reasonable estimations can be done with modern statistical methods and the relevant literature has flourished in the recent years. Russia is an auspicious subject of study in this field because its climate has warmed clearly faster than the global average, it is among the biggest greenhouse gas emitters in the world and it has a large and climatically versatile geography which is a methodologically useful characteristic. However, the literature for Russia has mainly concentrated on the agricultural impacts on climate change. The aim of this project was to study more comprehensively the various socio-economic effects of climate change in Russia. Our results suggest that Russia will probably benefit from mild warming because it is a relatively cold country but the effects vary regionally and thus also the adaptation measures should be regional.
