Project description
Effective host defence is a prerequisite for maintaining health under continuous microbial bombardment and for eliminating cells, which have undergone malignant transformation. Our Center aims at elucidating such fields in host defence that are currently either poorly understood or unknown. The main aim is to study the molecular mechanisms that leukocytes engaged in anti-microbial or anti-cancer responses use when they travel in the lymphatic vasculature. We will dissect the possible dual role of certain molecules involved in adhesion of cells and microbes to the vasculature. The multidisciplinary expertise and equipment needed to accomplish the goals are available at the Center and in its network. Therefore, although the areas to be addressed represent new openings for the Center, we believe that the goals will be reached. In addition to generating new knowledge, the subprojects have an inherent potential to generate novel commercially applicable discoveries.
