Project description
The objective of the project was to improve our understanding of the impacts of climate change on Arctic ecosystems and the services that they provide through detailed ecosystem studies, synthesis activities and societal and economic impact assessments. The research elements included vegetation, biodiversity, tree-line, waters, peatlands, snow and ice; the causal linkages in the changes, as well as their impacts on traditional livelihoods (reindeer herding, fisheries), forestry, tourism industry and local communities. A major aim was to assess whether tipping points have already been reached/exceeded in relation to any ecosystems. Our approach covered a full range of spatial and temporal scales, and combined observational, experimental, reconstructional, geospatial, modelling and socioeconomic methodologies to assess the vulnerability of northern environment and societies to climate change. The project outcomes are useful for regional development planning and adaptation strategies.
