Project description
A-LA-CARTE sought to investigate the extent to which present-day agrifood systems and biodiversity are resilient to changes in climate in Finland, and to explore the options for enhancing this resilience. The agrifood study surveyed the vulnerability of farms and small and medium size food enterprises to changing climate and examined options for enhancing resilience of the food chain whilst also meeting changing consumer demand. Historical analysis, modelling and engagement with plant breeders were used to assess the importance of "response diversity" in determining the resilience of barley cultivars under risks associated with changing climate. The biodiversity research analysed observed and projected climate change induced shifts in bird and butterfly species distributions and assessed factors presenting potential physical (e.g. habitat fragmentation), economic (e.g. costs of adaptive measures) and regulatory (e.g. conservation law) barriers to species migration.
