Project description
Perturbations in epithelial cell polarization lead to various organic dysfunctions and diseases. For example, it has been estimated that up to 80-90 % of all cancers are due to deregulated epithelium. Despite the importance of epithelial cell biology the cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate epithelial functions are incompletely understood. Several studies have implicated ECM as a central regulator of epithelial functions. We will also apply our methodological tools to develop a novel organ culture system to study the role of integrins in the regulation of epithelial differentiation during early kidney organogenesis. The aim is to develop epithelial in vitro models where the biological relevance of specific molecular components can be evaluated in conditions which very well mimic in vivo situation without having to go into more time-consuming and ethically challenging animal experiments.
