Project description
Adaptive traits are often quantitative traits, influenced by many genes and environmental variation. It has earlier been difficult to find the genetic basis of this variation, but the new methods of genomics have improved the situation. Here we study variation in a relative of the model organism Arabidopsis thaliana, namely Arabidopsis lyrata. The whole genome of this species has been recently sequenced. Developmental geneticists have resolved the genetic pathways leading to flowering and to trichome formation. Here we are examining which of these loci are involved in governing variation between individuals and populations in the traits. We also study in detail the interactions between genes leading to trichome formation. We also estimate what kinds of effects natural selection has had on the individual loci underlying the traits. We use the full genome sequence when we analyse selection. The results can be applied to understand how populations respond to changing environments.
