Project description
The Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study is one of the largest and long-standing observational studies in the world and the only large study in Europe with a follow-up of cardiovascular risk factors from childhood to adulthood. Observations made in the YFS are unique and will continue to have an important international role in contributing to the understanding how exposure to risk factors over the life-course translate into adult disease and in exploring the possibilities for prevention. This Academy project has enabled further characterization of this unique longitudinal cohort with use of spared serum samples collected in childhood and in adulthood. We found evidence for the role of adiponectin in the pathogenesis of early atherosclerosis. Novel genetic markers for blood pressure can predict future hypertension already in childhood. However, no evidence was found for the hypothesis that inflammation would be implicated in the pathogenesis of early atherosclerosis.
