Project description
This project adopted a life course approach to examine early socioeconomic circumstances as predictors of being selected into a job with stressful work conditions in adulthood. Work-related stress was stronger in those subjects who had experienced long-term stress or deficient maternal nurturing in their childhood. Those men who did shift work or whose work became passive had thicker vascular walls. Physically active adults are less prone to experience work stress and to have depressive symptoms. Physical activity in childhood and adolescence has long-term effects on lowering job strain in adulthood. Early childhood environment together with the innate temperament may influence stress sensitivity and how the individual experiences work stress later in life.
