Project description
Most of the knowledge concerning the effect of lifestyle and other cardiovascular risk factors is based on adult studies. Vascular changes start to develop already from childhood. The Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study /YFS), which started in 1980, is the largest European cohort study, in which development of risk factors has been followed from childhood to adulthood. The original study cohort consisted of 3596 children aged 3-18 years. The subjects have been followed in 3-9 years’ intervals. The present project is the 27 year follow-up study, carried out in 2007 in five study centres (Turku, Tampere, Helsinki, Kuopio and Oulu). The number of participants was 2204. The present levels and changes of the most important risk factors were measured. Also ultrasound examinations (e.g. IMT, FMD) were repeated. GWAS-analyses were carried out from all subjects, and this has produced unique results in cooperation with many study consortia.
